Common questions

What fabric for company uniforms?

Fabric is the single decision that most affects the quality, feel and cost of a uniform order — more than the cut or the printing method. The right fabric depends on the purpose (office polo, event t-shirt or sports uniform), the climate where it’s worn, the budget, and the printing technology you plan to use. This page helps purchasing teams and business owners pick the right fabric quickly.

Startee advises on fabric for each specific order and commits to properly imported, certified fabric — especially important for corporate uniforms and products that need proof of origin.

Quick pick by fabric type

FabricBest forStrengthsWatch out for
100% cottonEvent t-shirts, next-to-skin wearAbsorbs well, cool, prints accurately with DTGWrinkles more than blends; may shrink slightly in a hot wash
Cotton blends (CVC, TC)Bulk uniformsBalance of durability, stretch and cost; less wrinklingSlightly less absorbent than 100% cotton
Pique knitOffice & corporate polosThick, holds its shape, smart lookHeavier and warmer than plain jersey
Cool-touch / polySports & event uniforms, runningLight, smooth, dries fast, suits heat transferNot absorbent like cotton; not suited to DTG

Within cotton blends there are two common types: CVC (a higher cotton ratio — softer and more absorbent) and TC (a higher polyester ratio — durable, less wrinkling and cheaper). Bulk uniform orders balancing comfort against budget often land on a blend for exactly this reason — see the full breakdown in 100% cotton vs. cotton blends (CVC, TC).

Choosing by purpose

Office / corporate uniforms

Polos are the standard office choice. Pique knit gives a smart, structured look that holds its shape through repeated washing; if you prefer a softer, cooler feel, choose a cotton blend. For a company logo on a polo, prefer computerized embroidery — it’s durable and looks more premium than flat printing.

Event t-shirts / team building

Favor 100% cotton or a cotton blend for comfort and sweat absorption during outdoor activity. For a large run of one low-color design, screen printing gives the best per-piece price; for many colors or a photo, consider DTG. See the full comparison in DTG vs screen print vs heat transfer vs vinyl.

Sports uniforms / running

Choose cool-touch or poly knit: light, quick-drying, with a smooth surface that suits heat transfer and active wear. Numbers and names on sports shirts work well with heat-transfer vinyl. Note that poly doesn’t print accurately with DTG, so lock in the printing method at the same time as the fabric.

Choosing by Hanoi’s climate

Hanoi is hot and humid in summer and cold in winter, so no single fabric is "right all year". For summer and outdoor use, favor breathable, absorbent fabric such as 100% cotton, cotton blends, or pique for polos; for active wear choose cool-touch knit so it dries fast. For a group that needs a warmer layer in winter, Startee sews hoodies and sweaters on custom patterns — see roll fabric.

Three things often overlooked

  • Fabric weight (GSM): heavier fabric is more durable and structured but warmer; lighter fabric is cooler but loses shape faster. Tell us the use so we can advise the right weight — see the real weight table in what is fabric weight (GSM).
  • Fabric color and print method go together: DTG on dark fabric needs a white base layer, and poly knit doesn’t suit DTG — decide fabric color and print technique at the same time.
  • Shrinkage and care: 100% cotton can shrink slightly and wrinkles more; for a uniform worn often, a cotton blend or pique holds its shape more reliably.
  • Keep the order consistent: order the same fabric from the same source for the whole run to avoid color or fit differences between production batches.
Before a large production run, ask for a sample to check the fit, fabric color and print quality on the exact fabric chosen — it avoids mistakes across the whole order.
