Patch embroidery for bulk apparel orders
Patch embroidery embroiders a logo or design onto a separate piece of backing fabric first, then attaches that patch to the product by sewing or heat-pressing — instead of embroidering directly onto the product’s surface as with regular computerized embroidery.
Why choose patch embroidery
- Independent of the product’s surface — works even on materials that are hard to embroider directly, such as thin or highly stretchy fabric.
- Lower risk of damaging the finished product during embroidery, since the embroidery is done separately on backing fabric.
- Patches can be mass-produced in advance and attached to products later — efficient for large batch orders.
- The same embroidered design can easily be reused across different product types (shirts, caps, bags, backpacks).
Limitations to know
- The patch’s edge (the border of the backing fabric) is always visible — it doesn’t blend into the garment the way direct embroidery does, worth considering if you want the logo to sit flush with the surface.
- Not a fit for a design that changes on every product — patches are most efficient when reusing one fixed design across a large quantity.
- Adds an extra step (sewing or heat-pressing the patch on) compared with direct embroidery, so it takes more processing time.
Best fit: large batch production, a logo that needs to appear across multiple product types, materials that are hard to embroider directly.
