Roll fabric sourcing for custom uniforms
For orders made on a custom pattern rather than off-the-shelf blanks, Startee advises on the right roll fabric for the intended use, budget, and printing technology — since some fabrics work better with DTG/DTF, while others suit screen printing or embroidery better.
Common fabric groups
- 100% cotton — absorbs well, prints accurately with DTG, suitable for garments worn close to the skin and children’s products.
- Cotton blends (CVC, TC) — a balance of durability, stretch and cost, common for bulk uniform orders.
- Pique knit — used for polo shirts, thicker and holds its shape better than plain jersey.
- Cool-touch/poly knit — a smoother surface, suited to sublimation/heat-transfer printing and sports uniforms — see what fabric a running shirt should be.
Choosing fabric by printing method and product
| Fabric group | Best printing method | Best product fit |
|---|---|---|
| 100% cotton | DTG (most accurate color) | Office uniforms, children’s wear, garments worn close to skin |
| Cotton blends (CVC, TC) | Screen printing, DTF, embroidery | Bulk uniform orders needing a balance of cost and durability |
| Pique knit | Embroidery, screen printing | Office polo shirts, uniforms that need to hold their shape |
| Cool-touch/poly knit | Sublimation/heat transfer, HTV | Sports uniforms, running shirts |
DTG prints most accurately on high-cotton-content fabric; for polyester-heavy blends, screen printing, DTF or heat transfer holds color better — see printing technologies for the full comparison.
