Custom Fabric Sourcing for Bulk Uniform Orders

The fabric market is nearly limitless — cotton, cotton blends, specialty fibers like bamboo, coffee-yarn or organic cotton all exist and can be sourced; there’s no such thing as "only these few options available." But sourcing a specific fabric or weight for a given order has a real technical threshold that not every workshop states plainly. Here it is.

In-stock fabric, ready to use

For t-shirts, Startee always keeps 3 weights in stock — 230gsm, 250gsm, 280gsm — no waiting, no custom-sourcing lead time added. This is the fastest option for most uniform orders. See each weight’s characteristics at what is fabric weight (GSM).

Custom-batch fabric — the real threshold

Beyond the 3 in-stock weights, Startee still takes custom fabric orders — a different weight, a different composition, including specialty fibers like bamboo, coffee-yarn or organic cotton. The condition: the order needs to fill one minimum dye/weave batch — 300kg of fabric, roughly 1,200 shirts. Below that threshold, a dye/weave mill won’t run a batch just for one order, so only in-stock fabric is available.

Why many suppliers don’t state this threshold

Some suppliers that claim to offer specialty fabric (bamboo, organic cotton…) aren’t running their own dye/weave batch — they happened to buy someone else’s factory surplus. The quantity and color available then depends entirely on chance and can’t reliably be repeated. Startee states the real threshold (300kg) upfront instead of taking the order first and figuring it out later, so you know exactly where your order stands before committing.

Specialty fabric: bamboo, coffee-yarn, organic cotton

Specialty fibers — bamboo, coffee-yarn, organic cotton — all follow the same 300kg threshold as any other custom fabric order, with no lower exception. If your order doesn’t yet meet that threshold but you still want a specialty fabric, the practical path is combining orders or waiting to reach the quantity, rather than looking for unreliable "leftover stock."

The custom fabric process

  1. Confirm the order quantity meets the 300kg (~1,200+ shirt) threshold.
  2. Lock in the desired fabric weight/composition.
  3. Startee places the dye/weave batch to spec — this takes longer than in-stock fabric and needs to be factored into the production schedule. See the full process at ordering corporate uniforms.
